My Wedding Organiser Hid a Vendor Commission from Me

A caterer’s casual thank-you exposed the commission my trusted organiser never mentioned.

Three months before my wedding in Ibadan, I asked my friend Chinedu to coordinate vendors because he knew my budget. After the ceremony, the caterer casually thanked him for bringing the job and mentioned a ₦180,000 commission. Chinedu had also persuaded me to drop a cheaper caterer, saying the better menu justified the cost. When I confronted him, he showed messages proving the caterer offered the commission, not that he demanded it. He says the money covered transport, calls, and two weekends of work. My wife says the hidden payment changed his advice. Our WhatsApp group is now split between ‘organisers deserve something’ and ‘disclose everything.’

The question before the court

Should Chinedu return the commission or keep payment for organising?

  • Return it; hidden money makes his recommendations suspect.
  • Keep it; real organising work deserves compensation.
  • Split it after verifying his documented expenses.
  • Ask the caterer whether the payment was conditional.
